Happy Earth Day from Per Mar Security Services! Earth Day is a great time to start saving energy and money at home.

Here are three simple things you can start doing today.

1. Unplug your Chargers
It is important to unplug your computer, tablet and cell phone chargers when you are not using them. If chargers feel hot to touch that means they are using energy, even if you are not currently charging your device.

2. Turn Your Lights Off
An easy way to save energy and money is to turn lights off when you are not in the room. When you leave the room, make it a habit to turn off the lights behind you.

3. Control Your Thermostat Efficiently
You can save money on your heating and cooling bills by resetting your thermostat when you are asleep or away from home. The U.S Department of Energy says, “You can easily save energy in the winter by setting your thermostat to 68 while you are awake and setting it lower while you are asleep or at home. By turning your thermostat back 10° to 15° for 8 hours, you can save 5% to 15% a year on your heating bill -- a savings of as much as 1% for each degree if the setback period is eight hours long. In the summer, you can follow the same strategy with central air conditioning by keeping your house warmer than normal when you are away, and setting the thermostat to 78°F (26°C) only when you are at home and need cooling.”

A great way to manage the energy in your home and save money is to use a home energy management system like our Honeywell Total Connect™ Home Automation. Our Total Connect™ allows you to easily control and automate your thermostats, lights, locks, garage doors and water valves from one touch display at home, or via your mobile device on the go. If you leave home and forget to change the thermostat or shut off the lights, you can easily do so right from your phone
