Keeping Up With Your Emergency Contact List

January 5, 2018

This week’s blog is designed to walk you through the importance of having an updated emergency contact list on file with us (or your current security provider) and how to update it. We’ll also cover who to put on that list. Like changing out the batteries in your smoke detectors biannually, it’s a small housekeeping item that matters in the big picture!

Why Your Emergency Contact List is Important

We don’t typically think of our security company first when something, like our phone number, changes. That’s why it’s good to have emergency backups. Consider these scenarios:

  • Your fire alarm goes off and we cannot reach you because you changed cell phone carriers (and phone numbers)
  • Your burglar alarm goes off and you are out of town or in a dead cell coverage area
  • Your water sensor goes off and you’re in an important meeting at work (while your basement is rapidly flooding)

In the event of an emergency or alarm event, if we cannot reach you, our Monitoring Center will try your emergency contacts next.

Pro Tip: Create a file of all people and businesses that need to be updated when either you or one of your emergency contacts changes phone numbers.

Updating Your List (and Your Contact Information)

Updating both your emergency contact information and your general contact information is as easy as calling us at (866) 441-7487 or by visiting the Login Support section on our website and selecting the form called Alarm Account Changes. There, you can make changes to your account including updating the emergency contact/call list. Don’t forget to list any house pets!

Pro Tip: Confirm the most up-to-date information with each of your emergency contacts by calling each of them yourself (if you haven’t called them in a while).

Who Should You List?

The people on your emergency contact list are typically the favorites on your contact list in your smartphone.  These are people who will be able to get ahold of you, you trust, and can make a quick decision if the authorities need to be contacted.  Many contacts added to accounts are family or close friends.  Some prefer neighbors so they are in close proximity if needed.

Pro Tip: Don’t forget to let your emergency contacts know that they are on your list!

If in doubt, give us a call. We’re here to make safety easy for you and your loved ones and we need your help! Our 24/7 Monitoring Center is the best but having correct contact and emergency contact information on file makes a difference when seconds count!
